Two Hole Cards (Faced Down) - Pre-Flop or First Betting Round
Texas Hold’em Poker is usually played between 2 and 10 players sitting around the poker table. Before the game starts, the player immediately left to the dealer button post the forced bet known as small blind. The player immediately left to the small blind post another forced bet known as big blind. (Usually, the big blind is twice the size of the small blind.) The game begins with each player dealt two down- faced cards also known as hole cards or pocket cards. Now the pre flop or first betting round starts where all the subsequent players sitting immediately left to the big blind have the following betting options –Bet, Call, Raise or Fold. The betting action continues until each player has placed an equal amount in the pot.
Three Flop Cards or Community Cards (Faced Up) – Second Betting Round
After the pre-flop betting round, flop cards are dealt. Now the second and each subsequent betting round starts with the player sitting immediately left to the dealer button.
Turn Card (Fourth Community Card) or Fourth Street – Third Betting Round
After the second betting round, Turn Card or Fourth Street Card is dealt and the third betting round starts.
River Card (Fifth Community Card) or Fifth Street – Fourth and Final Betting Round
After the third betting round, River Card or Fifth Street is dealt and the final betting round starts, followed by the Showdown, if necessary.
Showdown Time – Pot is Awarded to the Winning Player
Showdown occurs when two or more players are remaining in the final betting round. The last bettor or raiser will show his/her hands first and all the subsequent players show their hands one-by-one. The pot is awarded to the player having the best five-card poker hand.
Important Cases: If a player bets while all other player folding their hands, then the pot is awarded to the betting player with no need to show his/her hand. The player with the best five-card poker hand wins the pot. If there are multiple hands of same rank, the pot will be equally divided between the players with the highest five-card hands. As per Texas Hold’em rules, all suits are equal.
A New Game of Texas Hold’em Poker Begins
Once the pot is awarded to the winning player, a new game of Hold'em begins. Now the dealer button moves clockwise to the subsequent player, forced bets are posted once again, and new hands are dealt to each player.
